I am currently working on 'Break the Deck', a 3D first-person game - with multiplayer and AI integration - developed as part of my A-Level Computer Science NEA using C#, Unity and Blender. This project, which I hope to finish before October 2025, is not just an immersive poker experience; it is also designed with the purpose to help individuals struggling with gambling habits. This game encourages users to enjoy poker in a safe, non-monetary environment while simultaneously encouraging social connections.
The name 'Break the Deck' symbolises both breaking away from parasitic gambling cycles and creating opportunities to 'break the ice' and connect with new people through the multiplayer aspect of the positive, social game. In card games, breaking the deck refers to reshuffling the deck, making it a fitting metaphor for reshaping a gambling relationship.
Through this project, I am building a strong foundation in several critical areas: multiplayer programming, AI development, and 3D modeling. Working on Break the Deck is deepening my understanding of Unity's game engine capabilities, the intricacies of C# for game logic, and the tediousness of 3D asset creation and animation in Blender (to save time I will not be modelling every single model - rather only about 40%). I'm also learning how to design a game with a purpose beyond entertainment, balancing functionality and user experience with empathy and social impact. This project is challenging me to think not only as a developer but also as a designer and problem-solver, using my skills to address complex social issues.
